This became his biggest hobby and sparked his love of poker. Virgil loved playing poker with friends and in tournaments. He also loved fishing and hunting with his family. Spending time with family was very important to him as well. He was a supporter of his kids’ and grandkids’ sports and loved going to games to cheer them on.  He was a member of Saint Mary Catholic Church, VFW Post #673, and Ireland Sportsman Club.

Surviving is his wife of 53 years, Mary Jean Werner; four sons Kevin (Gretchen), Tim (Brandy), Luke (Jenny), and Maurey (Lori) all of Ireland, Indiana; and one daughter Shannon Werner-Purkey (Ryan) of Evansville, Indiana; 14 grandchildren; two brothers Edward (Rosie) and John (Mary); six sisters Marian Lampert (Melvin), Cindy Lampert, Diane Kempf (Tim), Sue Schmidt (Greg), Pam Prechtel (Scott), and Alice Broughton.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Roman and Helen Werner, and two brothers Mike and David Werner.  The family would like to extend a special thanks to the nurses at the DaVita Jasper Dialysis, everyone at Heartland Cardiology, the nurses at the Linda E. White Hospice House, and the Doctors and nurses at the ICU: Kristina, Isaac, and Erin for their exceptional care.
