Orville R. Messmer, age 90, of Huntingburg

Orville R. Messmer, age 90, of Huntingburg, passed away at 12:34 p.m., on Sunday, March 8, 2020, at The Timbers of Jasper.

He was born December 22, 1929, in Huntingburg, to Frank and Rose (Bische) Messmer; and married RoseMary Egler on April 21, 1956, in Ferdinand.  Orville was a retired farmer and timber cutter.  He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Ferdinand American Legion Post #124, Huntingburg V.F.W. Post #2366, lifelong member of the Y.M.I. Club, and past president of St. Vincent de Paul Society in Jasper.  Orville was a United States Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict, was an avid horse racing and St. Louis Cardinals fan, and enthusiastic sheepshead card player.  He was preceded in death by his wife, RoseMary Messmer, who passed away on July 29, 2007; his parents; one son, Allen Messmer; four siblings, Viola Schaefer, Virgil Messmer, Richard Messmer and Leona Messmer; and one daughter-in-law, Lynne Messmer.

He is survived by six children, Sandi (David) Lant of Newburgh, Stanley Messmer, Curt (Mary) Messmer, Patrick (Sheryl) Messmer, Tim (Ann) Messmer and Doug (Karen) Messmer all of Huntingburg; six siblings, Sally Oeding of Huntingburg, Norma Steffen of Jasper, Hubert Messmer of Ferdinand, Ann Hoffman of Huntingburg, Bernie Mohler of Crawfordsville and Donald Messmer of Stendal; by (20) grandchildren and (24) great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Orville Messmer will be held at 10:00 a.m., E.D.T., on Thursday, March 12, 2020, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg with burial to follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.  Military graveside rites will be conducted by the V.F.W. Post #2366 Memorial Detail.  The funeral Mass will be celebrated by Rev. Ryan Hilderbrand.

Friends may call for visitation at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg from 2:00-8:00 p.m., E.D.T., on Wednesday.  A parish prayer vigil, conducted by Deacon Tom Holsworth, will be held at 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home.  

A Y.M.I. memorial service will immediately follow the prayer vigil.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
