Michael J. ("Mike") Lewinski. Age 79 of Dubois
Michael J. ("Mike") Lewinski. Age 79 of Dubois, Indiana, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2024. Born in Toledo, Ohio, on January 30, 1945, to Rudolph and Cleta (Dowe) Lewinski, Mike was the oldest of eight children.
As a young man, Mike answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Marine Corps. He was a Vietnam Veteran, having served his nation with dedication and honor. After his military service, Mike embarked on various career paths before finding his true calling in education. He retired from teaching special education from East Noble High School in Kendallville, Indiana, where he enjoyed making a difference in the lives of many students. Mike often reminisced about the summers of his youth spent at his Grandma's lake cottage, cherishing the memories of those early days. He carried forward the legacy of his Grandma Alice's potato bread recipe, which became a cherished family tradition that he lovingly passed on to his children and grandchildren. To Mike, his family was was his delight, and he often expressed that his children and grandchildren were the greatest joys of his life. He was immensely proud of each and every one of them. Beyond his love for his family, Mike had a passion for sailing and writing. He spent countless hours writing letters, articles, and novels, expressing his ideals in the written word. His biggest goal was to leave the world a better place for his friends and loved ones. His love for politics fueled his creativity, and in the last several years of his life, he proudly self-published two political thrillers.
Surviving are three children; Michael Lewinski, Michelle (Hugh) O'Brien, and Erin Kate (Jesse) Lahey, his grandchildren; J.J. (Jessica) Lahey, Cecily Lahey, Danny Lahey, Meghan O'Brien, Betsy Lahey, Hugh O'Brien, and Liam O'Brien; and his great-granddaughter, Addie Lahey, and his siblings John (Linda) Lewinski, Ed (Joann) Lewinski, Jeff (Allie) Lewinski, and Carol (Tim) Kasten. Mike has left a legacy of kindness, courage, and dedication to his country that will be remembered and honored by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Mike was predeceased by his parents, Rudolph and Cleta Lewinski, and his siblings Linda Lewinski, Kathy (Duane) Cole, and Chris (Charlene) Lewinski.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at the Crystal Community Church, 8014 East State Road 56, Dubois, Indiana, with burial to follow in the Crystal Community Cemetery. Pastor Mike Stout will officiate. The VFW Post #673 will conduct military graveside rites.A viewing will be from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. service time at Crystal Community Church on Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Crystal Community Church or a favorite charity.
