Marguerite R. Butcher, 89, of Loogootee

Marguerite R. Butcher, 89, of Loogootee, Indiana, passed away peacefully at Poplar Care Strategies on Friday, January 24, 2025. 

Born in Newton Stuart, Indiana, on March 22, 1935, to the late John and Dana Riley, Marguerite led a life full of love and dedication to her family and community. She graduated from French Lick High School in 1953 and furthered her education at a business college in Indianapolis. Marguerite dedicated 30 years of service to NSWC Crane, retiring in 1993. 

In her retirement, she found joy in quilting and baking, especially teaching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren the art of candy-making, earning her the affectionate nickname “Chocolate Grandma.” 

Marguerite was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 41 years, Richard “Dick” Butcher, who passed away on June 21, 1998, her sons Rick and Ronald Butcher, and 13 siblings. 

She is survived by her daughter, Karla (Bill) Latham of Chillicothe, Ohio, her sons, Thomas Butcher and Terry (Michelle) Butcher, both of Loogootee, 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and her sister, Marlene Riley. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Very Rev. J. Kenneth Walker at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 27 th , 2025, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, with burial to follow in St. John Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held on the same day from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at the church.
