Linda Lou Hopf, age 82 of Jasper, IN

Linda Lou Hopf, age 82 of Jasper, IN, passed away on September 1, 2024, while vacationing in California with her daughter Nancy and friends. 

She was beloved to many and dedicated to family, friends, and her family of business-related friends. 

Linda Lou was born July 3, 1942, to Othmar Franklin and Pricilla “Percy” Catherine (Buehler) Lorey. She was a 1960 graduate of Jasper High School and studied at St Mary of the Woods College before marrying her high school sweetheart, Charlie Hopf. 

She maintained friendships from high school to the present day with what she referred to has her “therapeutic lunches.” Linda Lou was united in marriage to Charles Eugene Hopf on August 29, 1963, at Precious Blood Parish, Jasper, IN. They enjoyed 61 years living life together. In her early years, Linda Lou worked for her parents’ businesses Lorey’s Fashions and Ben Franklin when both were located on the square in Jasper and later the Tastee Freez on the north side. As Charlie sold cars and later tractors, she devoted herself full-time to raising four children and volunteering in many activities. As the kids grew, she became payroll and bookkeeping manager as well as head cheerleader for family businesses and retained those roles until recently. 

Her passion was family, friends, and her family of business-related friends. She “never met a stranger” without her warm smile. She actively participated in the lives of her grandchildren and emphasized faith and family and led by example. Referring to her thirteen grandchildren as her “baker’s dozen,” Linda Lou was a high-octane mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She enjoyed meeting herself coming and going and was quick to mention to her legacies, “I love you a bushel and a peck, a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.” 

The Uhl Collecters Society knows her as a friend and steward of all things Uhl. She enjoyed looking for Uhl “small treasures” with family and friends locally and with her Arizona cousins. Linda Lou was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Daughters of Isabella, and Saint Anne’s Sodality. She enjoyed traveling, reading, bridge, and before her knees prevented it, golf and tennis. She and Charlie were German Club members. 

She was a devout member of St Joseph Catholic Church. Another passion was genealogy. She combined traveling and genealogy if possible. She and Fr. Linus Hopf produced a Hopf genealogy two volume book that traced the Hopf family tree back to Bavaria, Germany. Andrew and Margaretha Hopf journeyed from Germany to New Orleans abord the “Barque Bashaw” in 1839 and found a new home in Dubois County. She also documented the Loreys, Buehlers, Eckerles, Wehrs, and many others. 

Those who cherish Linda Lou’s memory include her husband, Charlie, and four children all of Jasper: three sons, Mike (Ann Dall) Hopf, Dr. Steve (Dana Meyer) Hopf, and Glen (Becky Hoffman) Hopf, and one daughter, Nancy (Craig) Knies; thirteen grandchildren, Dr. Heather (Beau) Huelster; Jason Hopf, Brandon (Natalie Beck) Hopf, Erich Hopf, Melinda (Nate) Ackley, Mary Kate Hopf, Natalie (Hunter) Richardson, Jackson Hopf, Carter Hopf, Camden Knies, Avery Knies, Maya Lou Knies, and Madelyn Knies; three great grandchildren, Henry Hopf, Lennon Lou Hopf, Owen Huelster, and a fourth great granddaughter on the way; her brothers, Les (Barb) Lorey and Len (Monica) Lorey; her brother-in-law, Jim (Terry) Hopf of West Lafayette; her sisters-in-law, Lois (Kenny) Hopf, Pat (Larry) Hopf, Mary Ann (Robbie) Mehringer, and Betty (Randy) Mehringer. 

Linda Lou was preceded in death by her parents, an infant grandson, Daniel Hopf, and brothers-in-law, Kenny Hopf and Larry Hopf. 

A Mass of Christian Burial for Linda Lou Hopf will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 13, 2024 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper, Indiana, with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper. A visitation will be held from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 12, 2024 at the Becher-Kluesner Northside Chapel in Jasper.  The Daughter of Isabella and The St. Anne's Sodality will pray the Rosary at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers or gifts, Memorial contributions may be made in Linda Lou’s name to the Faith and Family Endowment at the Dubois County Foundation.
