Joseph Raymond (Joe) Doyle age 91
Joseph Raymond (Joe) Doyle, a man who loved his family and sharing his stories,
passed away on June 3, 2024 at the age of 91. Joe was known for his big smile and
even bigger personality. He never met a person he didn’t like, especially since it
provided him with a new audience to listen to his antics from the last nine decades.
Joe was born in Loogootee on May 17, 1933 and lived there most of his life. Joe
was very active in Boy Scouts and earned the coveted honor of Eagle Scout in
1947. He graduated from Loogootee High School in 1951 and went on to enroll at
Indiana University. His studies were interrupted with his service in the United
States Army during the Korean conflict, but he returned to IU and graduated in
1958 with a B.S. in Business/Marketing. While at IU, Joe was an active member of
Theta Chi fraternity, later serving as President of its Alumni Association. Few are
bigger IU fans than Joe, evidenced by his request to be buried with his iconic red
IU cowboy hat.
After graduation, Joe lived and worked in Indianapolis where he met and married
the love of his life Vivian (Vicky) Larson in 1961. Joe and Vicky moved back to
Loogootee in 1973 to help run the Doyle Lumber company and to raise their five
children in the community he loved.
Joe’s life was full of adventures and traveling. He visited 49 states, leaving only
Alaska unchecked. Having two children who worked for airlines allowed him to
visit Vicky’s relatives in Sweden, see the canals in Amsterdam, ascend the Eiffel
Tower in Paris, and his crowning achievement, enjoying a beverage on the Great
Wall of China. His personality drew people to him wherever he went, making
lasting connections with all those he encountered. He will be remembered most for
his storytelling legacy. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew
him, but his stories will continue to live on in the memories of all who were
touched by his warmth and charm.
He served as President of the Loogootee Schools Alumni Association and was
honored as the 2001 Community Service Award recipient. Furthermore, Joe served
the local and state communities in many other leadership roles including:
President, Loogootee Lions Club; Member, Martin County Economic Advisory
Council; Member, Loogootee Economic Advisory Council; Member, Martin
County Lilly Scholarship Selection Committee; Member and Exalted Ruler,
Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree; Board of Directors, St. John’s Cemetery;
Board of Directors, Indiana University Alumni Association-Southern Indiana
Region; Board of Directors, Indiana Governor’s P.I.C. Council; Board of
Directors, Vincennes University Building Trades Advisory Council; President,
Board of Directors, Indiana Lumber and Builders Supply Association; and Vice
President, Board of Directors, Indianapolis Manufacturing Association.
Joe will be tremendously missed by his expansive and loving family, including his
loving wife of 62 years, Vivian “Vicky” (Larson) Doyle; his daughter Kyle
Kroehler, (Jon), grandchildren Joshua, Anderson and Hannah; his son J.R.,
(Cathy), grandchildren Bailey, Noah and Elijah; his son Rex, (Carolyn),
grandchildren Tony (Ali), Bridget (Colin), Grant and Mark, great-grandchildren
