James C. Mundy, age 89 of Texas, formerly of Jasper,

James C. Mundy, age 89 of Austin, Texas, formerly of Jasper, Indiana, passed peacefully on Tuesday morning, February 9, 2021 at Gracy Woods II Living Center in Austin, Texas.  

James was born in Jasper, Indiana on September 4, 1931 to Urban and Loraine (Hoffman) Mundy.  

He graduated from Jasper High in 1949, received his bachelors degree from Indiana State Teachers College in 1959, his masters from Indiana State in 1963 and his advanced certificate in Music Education from University of Illinois in 1964. 

James enjoyed teaching music (band and choir) from students from grades 1-12.   He taught at Catholic and public schools.  When health issues surfaced for family members, he retired early from teaching and returned to Jasper, working at the Jasper Desk Company.  Following the onset of dementia, James spent the final years of his life near his daughter in Austin, Texas, but always considered Jasper his home.  

James was a lifelong Catholic and person of deep faith in God who kept a copy of the 10 Commandments in his wallet and his Bible near.  He was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Austin Texas and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper.   

He played Trumpet in a big-band style group.  He loved playing the piano and leading the family in a sing-along.  He enjoyed many types of music, but big band was his favorite.   He enjoyed gardening, reading, camping, and taking long walks, always stopping for ice cream on the way.  He enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren, whether it be how to swim, how to fish, or driving a car.  People who knew James described him as a hard worker and one of the happiest people they had ever met.  He was a model of enjoying the simple pleasures in life, not attached to worldly possessions.  James was a man dedicated to God and will be remembered for his wonderful smile, his joyful eyes, and for never saying anything bad about anyone.   

Surviving are two children; Elizabeth "Liz" Mundy Boyd, Plainfield, IN, and Anne Mundy Klock (Bill), Austin TX, three grandchildren; Stephanie Klock Rayl (Jeremy), Cynthia Boyd, and Anna Boyd, one great-grandchild; Jace McKee, and one sister; Sharon Wilkus (Jerry), Medford, OR  

Preceding him in death were his parents and an infant sister; Maria Catherine Mundy.   

Due to the Covid Pandemic, a private Mass of Christian Burial for James C. Mundy will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Jasper, Indiana, with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper.  A celebration of James life will be held at a later date.
