Harold E. Erny, age 92, of Jasper
Harold E. Erny, age 92, of Jasper, Indiana, passed away at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, June 28, 2021 at home surrounded by family.
Harold was born on August 8, 1928 in Jasper, Indiana to Edward and Christina (Blessinger) Erny. He married Mildred Lechner on April, 9 1953, in St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
Harold was an Army Veteran who served in the Korean War.
He was a jack of all trades. He worked at Jasper Lumber for many years. He used his carpentry skills to help people build homes and pour concrete. He worked as a custodian at 10th Street School in Jasper. He was a superintendant at the Jasper Municipal Golf Course. He was a bridge supervisor and retired from the Dubois County Highway Department.
He was a founding member of Precious Blood Catholic Church, the Precious Blood Men's Club and their St. Vincent DePaul Society, the Honor Guard Rifle Squad of the American Legion Post #147 and the VFW Post #673.
He received the Brute' Award and the Mother Teresa Service Award.
He enjoyed playing cards, especially sheephead and spades with his family and friends. He was a coon hunter and an avid fisherman. He enjoyed baking cookies and watching his grandchildren in their sports and activities. He was an IU basketball and a St. Louis Cardinals fan.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years Mildred Erny, Jasper, IN, seven children; Gregory (Valerie) Erny, Reno, NV, Jeff (Becky) Erny, Northport, AL, Marilyn (Donnie) Schepers, Jasper, IN, Ed (Belinda) Erny, Lexington, KY, Charlotte (Glen) Schepers, Celestine, IN, Allen (Brenda) Erny, Jasper, IN, Diane (Scott) Gress, Celestine, IN, two sisters; Margaret (Donald) Eckerle, Mildred Erny, fourteen grandchildren; Stephen, Christina and Matthew Erny, Ben and Nick (Christian) Erny, Jennifer, William, Elizabeth Schepers, Samantha (Jarrad) Beard, Alex Erny, Amanda (Jessie) Schepers, Joe, Jacob and Curtis Gress, two great-grandchildren, Jaden and Dylan Erny.
Preceding him in death are four sisters, Mary Alice Schuetter, Helen Hochgesang, Anna Mae Reckelhoff, Betty Reynolds, four brothers; Robert, Richard, Vincent and Sylvester Erny.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 3 at 10:00 a.m. in Precious Blood Catholic Church with burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery in Jasper. The American Legion Post #147 will conduct military graveside rites.
A visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Funeral Home in Jasper, Indiana on Friday, July 2 and one hour before the 10 a.m. service time at Precious Blood Catholic Church on Saturday, July 3rd.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Precious Blood Catholic Church or to a favorite charity.
