Edwin L. Prechtel, age 92, of Jasper

Edwin L. Prechtel, age 92, of Jasper, Indiana, passed away surrounded by family at 8:47 a.m. on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at Brookside Village in Jasper, Indiana. 

Edwin was born in Jasper, Indiana, on May 6, 1932, to John and Clara (Engelhart) Prechtel.  He married Juliana Wallhauser in 1982, and she preceded him in death in 1989.   He then married JoAnn Lichlyter on October 9, 1994, at Precious Blood Catholic Church in Jasper, Indiana.  She preceded him in death on March 21, 2015. 

He was a graduate of Jasper High School. He was a United States Army Veteran, who served in Korea in 1953.  He served the rest of his time in Fort Carson, Colorado.  He was honorably discharged with commendations as he received the Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Badge, and Korean Conflict Badge. He worked at the Jasper Corporation from 1950-1963, Holland Dairies from 1965-1989, and Best Chairs from 1989 until retirement in 1997. Edwin was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper, Indiana, lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post #673, and the American Legion Post #147. He enjoyed animals, old tractors, auctions, his cat-Ellie, and was an avid Cardinals and Colts fan. 

Surviving are two step-daughters, Julie (Mike) Hopf, Huntingburg, IN, Barb (Tim) Hopf, Huntingburg, IN, two step-sons, Mark (Rose) Lichlyter, Jasper, IN, and, Gary (significant other, Sue) Lichlyter, Lemont, IL, 13 step-grandchildren, Kelli Steuer, Emily Leinenbach, Ryan Hopf, Matthew Lichlyter, Megan Hopf, Katie Pfaff, Sara Niehoff, Shelby Garrison, Sophie Lichlyter, Gabe Lichlyter, Jeanne Hummel, Josh Parsons, and Jessie Borgmann, 23 step-great grandchildren, and two more on the way due in December of 2024 and March 2025, and nieces and nephews, David Prechtel, John Prechtel, Alan Prechtel, Linda Carey, Sue Grieve, Nancy Brown, Diane Reynolds, Carol Jochem, Randy Buchta, Terry Buchta, Bill Buchta, Janice Bell, Karen Moeller, and Kathy Mathies. 

Preceding him in death besides Juliana and JoAnn, are two sisters, Lorena Eckert and Dorothy Buchta, and three brothers, Hilbert, Sylvester, and Leo Prechtel. 

A Mass of Christian Burial for Edwin L. Prechtel will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper, Indiana, with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper, Indiana.  The V.F.W. Post #673 will conduct military gravesite rites. A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. Mass time at Holy Family Catholic Church on Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to the wishes of the family.
