Betty J. Hoffman, age 91, of Jasper, Indiana, passed away at 6:50 p.m. on Wednesday, December 9, 2020, at Northwood Good Samaritan Retirement Community in Jasper, IN.
Betty was born in Jasper, Indiana, on December 2, 1929, to Cletus and Amber (Dick) Knabel. She married Jim Hoffman on November 23, 1950. He preceded her in death on April 2, 1976.

Betty was a 1947 graduate of Jasper High School and received her RN degree from St. Joseph Infirmary/Nazareth School of Nursing in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1950, her BS in elementary education from St. Benedict’s College in Ferdinand, Indiana, in 1970, and her MS in health and safety education from Indiana University in 1973. She taught health and safety at Jasper High School and served as school nurse for Greater Jasper schools for 32 years.
Before her career in education, Betty worked at Stork Memorial Hospital in Huntingburg, Indiana, and Memorial Hospital in Jasper and as an office nurse for Dr. George A. Held. Betty was a certified EMT and a CPR instructor. She also was a Red Cross First Aid instructor.
Betty was the founder of the HOSA-Health Occupations Students of America-program in Dubois County schools. HOSA serves students from the four area high schools who are interested in pursuing careers in health related fields.
Before her career in education, Betty worked at Stork Memorial Hospital in Huntingburg, Indiana, and Memorial Hospital in Jasper and as an office nurse for Dr. George A. Held. Betty was a certified EMT and a CPR instructor. She also was a Red Cross First Aid instructor.

She was active in local politics and served with the Easter Seal Society, Indiana Association of School Nurses, Dubois County Mental Health Association, Indiana Vocational Cooperative and the Jasper Business and Professional Women’s Club.
Betty enjoyed painting and ceramics and taught an adult craft class at the Habig Community Center. She was also a home health nurse.
Betty was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper, Indiana.
Surviving are three daughters, Cindy (Tom) Seger, Jasper, Kathy (Sara) Hoffman, Ada, Michigan, Missy (Bob) Brusie, Wellington, Florida, 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three brothers, Jim Knabel, Venice, Florida, Joe Knabel, Alva, Florida and Charles Knabel, San Antonio, Texas.
Preceding her in death besides her husband are one son, Tim Hoffman, who died in 2010, and two brothers, Bob Knabel and Ken Knabel.
A private family Mass of Christian burial will be held at a later date with burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery
Due to the pandemic, there will be no visitation.
Memorial contributions may be made to Jasper Memorial Hospital, The American Red Cross or Dubois County Humane Society.
