Barbara J. Payne, 71, of Shoals

Barbara J. Payne, 71, of Shoals, passed away on Sunday, September 23, 2023 at her residence.

Born July 28, 1952, in Shoals, she was the daughter of Chester Paul and Olive Louise (Yarbrough) Hart.

Barbara attended Shoals High School and worked as a homemaker.

She married George Arlie Payne on May 15, 1972 and he preceded her in death on April 28, 1987.

Barbara enjoyed walking, reading, spending time at the Boogie Barn in Mitchell, and adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are her children, Norma Jean (Dexter II) Thomas, of Hampton, GA, and James Arlie (Starla Ann Enlow) Payne, of Shoals; grandchildren, Caleb James (Tonya) Payne, Ashley Marie (Mike Shartzer) Payne, Austin George Payne, Ethan Alexander Payne, Emily Rose Payne, Mary Elizabeth Enlow, all of Shoals, and Kyrie Madison-Kay (Cameron) Neill, of Washington; great-grandchildren, Bradley Payne, Axel Payne, Max Payne, Jase Payne, Waylon Neill, Juniper Shartzer, and Gwendolyn Shartzer; siblings, Freida (David) Rincker, Shirley Gibson, Brenda (Garney) Boyd, Daniel Hart, and Joe Hart; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, Merlin Ray Jones; husband, George; grandson, Jonathon (Jonny) Payne; siblings, Chester Lee Hart, James “Bud” Hart, and Donald Eugene Hart in infancy; nephew, George Andrew “Andy” Bauernfiend; and niece, Carrie Jeanette Hart.

Cremation was chosen and no services will be held in accordance with Barbara’s wishes.
