VFW Post 673 Recognizes Scholarship and Teacher Award Winners
JASPER - VFW Post 673 hosted the Voices of Democracy and Patriot's Pen scholarship winners as well as the Teacher Award winner during the Post Auxiliary’s annual Spring Fling dinner on May 13, 2022. Voices of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen awardees read their entries and received scholarship awards after dinner and a brief Memorial Service honoring VFW and VFW Auxiliary members who passed in 2021.
The theme for Voices of Democracy was "America: Where Do We Go From Here?". The First Place awardee was Nathaniel Ramirez, a student at Jasper High School. Nathaniel also placed third at VFW District 8 competition and received $1000 in scholarship funds.
The theme for Patriot’s Pen was "How Can I Be a Good American?". This year's winner was MaKenna Cummins, a student at Jasper Middle School. MaKenna received $500 in scholarship funds.
The Teacher Award was given to Mrs. Christine Betz. Christine is a fourth grade teacher at Northeast Dubois Intermediate School where she administers the annual Flag Test and focuses lessons on civics and patriotic themes. Christine received $300 to support classroom needs.
Both scholarship contests are held annually and include entries from the Greater Jasper and Northeast Dubois school districts. The contests are open to all who qualify, including home schooled students.
