Veteran Police Chief Retires from Jasper PD
The Jasper Police Department has some big shoes to fill, as Chief of Police Nathan Schmitt
announced his retirement last week. A fixture in the JPD, Chief Schmitt received an associate
degree in law enforcement at Vincennes University and graduated from Indiana University’s
Police Academy. He served as a campus police officer at IUPUI and as a Lafayette police officer.
Schmitt became part of the JPD in 2001 and was promoted to sergeant in 2006. He took over
the current position of Jasper Police Chief in 2017, where he will continue to serve until his
retirement date of January 3, 2025.
Chief Schmitt said that he will be continuing his law enforcement career in a new position with
the Deaconess Police Department at Memorial Hospital. When asked what about the areas of
public safety he would like to see his successor prioritize, the Chief clearly articulated his
feelings, saying that the growing city needs to “continue to embrace new technology, but
remember good old fashion policing that involves building relationships with the community.”
The veteran of law enforcement also emphasized the need for the community to add quality
officers to the department. The Chief advised, “you can't wait for problems to start and then try
to hire officers to address the problems, because it's too late. Stay ahead of growth, hire for
character, and train for skills.”
The vacancy opened by his retirement is the second significant law enforcement opening
created in Dubois County in recent months. The City of Jasper has officially announced the open
position and asks that all inquiries be submitted by November 15. Interested applicants should
send a letter and resume to: Personnel Director, EOE #430, PO Box 29, Jasper, IN 47547-0029.
Materials can also be sent by email to [email protected]. More information is available
on the City of Jasper Facebook page or online at jasperindiana.gov/employment.
