Three Vehicle Accident Totals Two

Jasper- A three vehicle accident has totaled two of the vehicles and sent one woman to the hospital.

On Saturday evening, officers with the Jasper Police Department were called to the scene of an accident involving three people at 3rd and Hopf Avenue. The three involved:

  • Jennifer Merkley, 40 of Jasper
  • Martha Niehaus, 67 of Huntingburg
  • Tyler Haas, 27 of Jasper

Officers’ report Merkley and Niehaus were traveling in opposite directions, Merkley going north and Niehaus traveling south, on 3rd Avenue. According to a report, Merkley failed to yield the right of way to Niehaus and crossed the southbound lane.

Niehaus struck the rear passenger side of Merkley’s vehicle, causing her to spin into Haas, who was at a stop sign at Hopf Avenue.

Niehaus was transported via EMS to the hospital for injuries sustained in the accident.

Merkley was cited for failure to yield the right away by officers with JPD. Both Niehaus and Merkley’s vehicles were ruled totaled according to a press release.
