The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has a lot going on this Spring in Southern Indiana.
On April 12, the DNR will present its Spring Kayak Tour at Patoka Lake. Visitors are invited to
spend the afternoon out on the lake with a Naturalist. Those participating will learn about the
lake and local wildlife. The tour will leave at noon from the South Lickfork Boat Ramp at 3084 N.
Dillard Road in Birdseye.
Those wishing to attend should bring their own kayak and flotation device, and don’t forget to
purchase your 2025 non-motorized lake permit prior to the event. Permits are $5 and can be
purchased in person at property offices and entrance gates at state parks, reservoirs, and
forests. They may also be purchased online at Mother Nature’s Mercantile.
On April 30 at 12:30, Patoka Lake will also be hosting a kayaking lesson for beginners. The event
is open to visitors aged 12 and older. All equipment, including life jackets, will be provided.
Various styles of kayaks and paddles will be available to try. Instruction will include basic kayak
operation, gear introduction, and the best places to paddle on the lake.
Registration in advance is required. The event cost is $5 per person. To register, call the Nature
Center at 812-685-2447. Vehicle entrance fees are $7 for Indiana residents and $9 for non-
residents.
