SW Dubois Students On the Move

The Southwest Dubois County School Corporation held their regular board meeting on Thursday night amid winter weather and the first snowfall of the season.

In the SWD Highlight, the board heard about the school’s exciting foray into Electric Vehicle Sports. Southridge High School students have formed an EV sports team and were able to participate in the annual EV Grand Prix, hosted by Purdue. There, they honed their engineering and physics skills as they designed, built, and raced their Raider go-kart, finishing 9 th out of 22 teams. Now, they’re looking forward to the spring racing season!

The district was awarded a $15,000 Digital Learning Parent and Family Support Grant. This will support families with educational technology, virtual learning skills, and tech training. The board also acknowledged the family of Ora Lee Cotton for their $5000 donation to the SWDCS Food Service Fund.

Holland Elementary students have been busy, with the Spell Bowl team placing first in their division this past Monday. At Huntingburg Elementary, the Student Lighthouse team created the “Buddy Bench.” The Buddy Bench is a student-led space where kids can go if they’re looking for someone to talk to, or if they’d like to meet a new friend. Mr. Collins’ construction class will build the benches, and they will be designed and painted by the HBE art classes.

The Southridge Middle School Spell Bowl Team competed in the state Spell Bowl, held at Purdue University on Saturday, earning State Runner-Up for Class 3. The Spell Bowl Regional competition was hosted by Southridge High School, who secured the Class 2 championship. Southridge High School students also represented the district in Indiana All-State Choir and Academic All-State Volleyball. Also, as of November 16, Ava Montgomery became a 1,000-point scorer for SHS Girls’ Basketball.

Southwest Dubois County School Corporation regular board meetings are open to the public and are held on the third Thursday of the month from 5:30-6:30. The SWDCS board room is located at 105 W Sunset Dr., Huntingburg IN.
