Suspect, Victims Identified in Greenwood Shooting

Greenwood- The shooting suspect, victims and the civilian have been identified in Sunday’s shooting at the Greenwood Park Mall.

On Monday, July 18, law enforcement officials identified 20-year-old Jonathan Douglas Sapirman as the suspected shooter. Police officials say Sapirman arrived at the mall roughly an hour before the shooting took place, locking himself in a bathroom near the food court.

Greenwood Police Chief James Ison said Sapirman used an AR-15 style rifle which was legally purchased from a Greenwood gun store on March 8th. He had two other guns with him, another rifle and a handgun along with 100 rounds of ammunition.

Officers raided his apartment and found his laptop in what was described as a “high-temperature” oven with a can of butane. The laptop was sent to Quantico to be searched and analyzed by the FBI along with a cellphone that was found in a toilet in the food court restroom.

Among the victims was a couple, Pedro Pineda, 56, Rosa Mirian Rivera de Pineda, 37 and Victor Gomez, 30, all from Indianapolis. A 12-year-old girl, who was identified by her parents as Bella, was hit with a bullet fragment while fleeing from the shooting.

Officials also identified the legally carrying civilian who stopped the shooting as Elisjsha Dicken, 22 of Seymour. Dicken used his conceal carry Glock to shoot Sapirman “multiple times”, according to reports.

Dicken does not have a conceal carry permit, but was carrying under Indiana’s Constitutional Carry Law.

Dicken’s Attorney, Guy A. Relford, told CNN, “(Dicken’s) is a true American hero who saved countless lives during a horrific event that could have been so much worse if not for Eli's courage, preparedness and willingness to protect others."

Simon Malls has a “No Weapons” Policy in their properties. There has been no comment from the mall group about Dicken’s carrying.

The motives in the shooting are still under investigation.
