SureStay Hotel Shooting in Jasper Leaves One Dead

At approximately 2:10 on Thursday afternoon, Jasper Police dispatch was notified of possible shots fired. Witnesses reported gunfire at the SureStay Plus off 231, just behind Jasper Engines. The report indicated that shots were fired between two individuals in the parking lot of the hotel. As a safety measure, officials implemented a soft lockdown at Jasper High School due to its proximity to the hotel. 

Jasper Lieutenant David Burger said that when officers arrived on scene, witnesses indicated that the suspect had gone back inside the hotel. One male suspect was taken into custody without incident. A male victim suffering multiple gunshot wounds was transported to the hospital by others on the scene before the arrival of police or ambulance. Multiple sources confirmed that 5-8 shots were fired, many of them striking the victim. 

Both the victim and the suspect were part of a group of construction employees in town for business. They are not residents of Jasper or Dubois County. A possible motive has not yet been released. There were no other injuries reported and there is no threat to the public. The suspect is being detained by Jasper Police. Indiana State Police Sergeant John Davis told WITZ that the case is being investigated by the Jasper Police Department. ISP is handling the crime scene, and Dubois County law enforcement has provided assistance. 

In speaking with the owner of the SureStay Plus hotel, he confirmed that he’s been a part of the Jasper community for more than 10 years, and this is the first incident of major violence he’s had at the hotel. At the time of the shooting, his 19-year-old son was on duty at the main desk. The family-run established continued to have a significant police presence well into the evening as the investigation continued. WITZ will have more as the details become available. 

Jakahri Curry, age 20 of Macon Georgia is being charged with murder. 

Lawrence Walker, age 27 of of Cleveland, Ohio succumbed to his injuries at Deaconess Memorial Hospital.
