Dubois County Braces for Dangerous Storm Conditions

City and County services are helping residents to plan ahead for dangerous storm conditions. As Dubois County prepares for potential flood conditions and an anticipated rainfall of 10-15 inches from Wednesday through Sunday, emergency services are providing resources for residents. County residents are cautioned to expect severe storm conditions which could include dangerous winds, tornadoes, flash flooding, and large hail.

Dubois County Emergency Management has sand and sandbags available at the Dubois County 4H Fairgrounds. Enter through the main fairgrounds drive at 4157 S St Rd 162 in Huntingburg. Please bring a shovel to fill the provided sandbags. There are no prefilled bags.

WITZ was at this location and talked to local residents. A number of people mentioned concern about both the wind and the rain on the already saturated ground. After loading her sandbags in her car, Beth Ann, who has lived in Jasper for the past four years, said she was grateful to live in a county with such exemplary emergency services. She also said preparing for these kinds of storms is something she’s done before: “I have basically a little house behind my house that I’ve turned into an art shed. Unfortunately, it is on a slight slope and the water drains down and sometimes into the door and I’m worried about the foundation, and I’ve done this before. I’ve put sandbags out and it’s worked. But unfortunately sandbags only last about a season and then they deteriorate, so they need to be redone.”

And of her level of concern for this particular storm: “Very worried. We have a little grove of trees, and we lost two trees. The gentleman about five doors down lost two huge trees that he used to put Christmas decorations up in. Big, white balls that I’m sure everyone in Jasper is familiar with. And we always enjoyed it – we could see it from our back yard. They were so beautiful. But he lost two of the three trees that he would decorate. So yeah, I’m a little worried. I have a big maple in my front yard.”

Many of the people we spoke to said they were taking a “better safe than sorry” attitude, but that preparation was just a part of living in Southern Indiana. The Jasper Street Department also has sandbags available. Stop by the front office at 305 Clay Street during office hours, Monday- Friday from 7am-4pm. The Street Department will supply bags, sand, and shovels. Remember to avoid unnecessary travel during dangerous storm conditions. Downed power lines and trees will be possible. Observe all road closure signs, and do not drive through high water.
