Southeast Dubois School Board: Partnership with VUJC Extended, Junior High to Offer High School Credits

Ferdinand - In Wednesday night's Southeast Dubois School Board meeting, the board approved an expanded program with VUJC and introduced high school credits at a junior high level.

Superintendent Jamie Pund introduced a new way to alleviate scheduling pressure at the high school, presented by Principal Tyler Lemen.

“Scheduling for the high school students is growing more difficult as we have more shared programs - so our welding programs, construction, trades, as well as our courses at VUJ, Pike Central Automotive, Southridge,” Lemen said. “They require three to four periods of our students’ once they get to their Junior, Senior year. So our goal in adding more high school credit courses at the 8th grade level is to alleviate some of that pressure.”

Beginning next school year, Forest Park will offer dual credit for eighth graders in Physical Education and Foreign Language as they move onto high school. Algebra 1 will continue to be offered for dual credit. Participating in P.E. in eighth grade and band or a sport in high school would completely fulfill the requirement.

In a partnership with Vincennes University-Jasper Campus, Forest Park hosted college students for a welding course being offered at VUJC. In the previous school year, only one class made the trip to the high school; in the upcoming year, two classes will now take place at Forest Park High School.
