SOUTHEAST DUBOIS SCHOOL BOARD MEETING

A positive and optimistic mood pervaded the Southeast Dubois County School Corporation Superintendent’s Office as the board convened their first meeting of the new year. A brief organizational meeting was conducted, followed by an in-depth financial overview delivered by Superintendent Dr. Jamie Pund covering the current economic state of the district. Also on the agenda was a comprehensive update on a pair of proposed improvements, firstly the roof at Cedar Crest and secondly addressing the track and field facilities. New LED lights above the track will deliver a significant energy savings over the next two decades, while improving the entertainment factor once installed.

Additionally, the on-site drainage and layout for the field events can be modernized making the facility more versatile and visitor friendly. If approved, these updates would begin as soon as school is dismissed in June. After the meeting, Board President Kent Uebelhor reiterated the importance of building total students and praised the recent hiring of a school resource officer to further improve student safety and provide a positive learning environment.

Also present were two members of the student advisory board who were tasked with representing their classmates and reporting on upcoming school events. Ava Fletcher said that one of her goals as a senior board advisory member is to “properly represent the students and show the community some things that they may not realize are going on and what students are doing.” Fellow senior board member Jalynn Egloff expressed her excitement for graduation and increasing the bond with her fellow students before they go their separate ways at the end of the semester. The students and board members have a lot to look forward to with a number of events on the horizon, including kindergarten registration, Homecoming, FAFSA night on January 23, Ranger night, and the Chili Supper. Southeast Dubois County School Corporation meetings are public and held on the first Wednesday of each month from 6:30-7:30 pm.
