SILD to Host 16th Annual Armed Forces Day 5K Run and Fun Walk in Memory of LCpl. Alec Terwiske
SILD members Dave Englert, Pat Moriarty, and Steve Lindauer, with member and Gold Star Mother Sandy Terwiske, joined Justin Howard on WITZ on Monday morning. The organization is still accepting registrations for their 16th annual Armed Forces Day 5K Run and Fun Walk.
This year's event is being run to commemorate Alec Terwiske, a Dubois County native, who was killed in action overseas.
Terwiske was a 2010 graduate of Northeast Dubois High School. He joined the Marine Corps in 2010, just after high school, and later was deployed to Afghanistan. Alec lost his life September 3, 2012.
The annual event, taking place at the Jasper Youth Sports Complex, aids funding efforts for a number of local organizations, says Moriarty.
"All monies collected through pre-registration and registration, day of," Moriarty said. "Distribution goes to help with care packages, local families in need, Marines, scholarships, Honor Flight, Toys for Tots."
The 2022 Armed Forces Day 5K Run and Fun Walk is scheduled for Saturday, May 21st. Race-day registration begins at 7:00 a.m.; the run and fun walk starts at 8:00 a.m.
SILD's Dave Englert shares more details on registration and how many participants they're expecting.
"Normally, we have anywhere between 100 and 150," Englert said. "This year it's kind of slow going yet, but, that's normal."
"The deadline is Friday, the 13th - that's an indicator right there, I think," Englert joked.
Pre-registration is currently open through May 13th for $25.00 per guest. Registration on race day will increase to $30.00 per participant. T-Shirts will be sold for $20 apiece.
New this year - registrations can be handled through the scanning of QR codes, which can be found on Facebook.
In addition, the organization has created new age brackets. The new ages groups were founded to meet growing senior demographics: 61-65, 66-70, and 71+.
There will be cash prizes for Top Finishers, Age Group Awards, and Overall Male and Female participants.
