Messmer Column: Senate Internships
Local Sources- On this week's Messmer Column, State Senator Mark Messmer (R-Jasper) discusses: Senate Internships.
As college students return to campus to plan out their coming year, I'd like to remind them of the internship opportunities the Indiana Senate has to offer.
The Indiana Senate Republican Caucus offers paid internships in a variety of roles:
- Legislative Interns track and analyze bill data, provide constituent services and staff committee meetings;
- Legal Interns conduct legal research, draft and file Senate motions, summarize amendments and committee reports, and create a daily legislative agenda;
- Policy Interns research, track and summarize legislation to assist senators and staff;
- Press Secretary Interns track legislation and media coverage, write news releases and op-eds, and work with members of the media;
- Information Technology Interns respond to IT needs of senators and staff, troubleshoot hardware and software issues, and assist in the implementation of new technology;
- Multimedia Interns assist with Senate photography and videography needs, stream committees and session, create visual content for print and web, and assist in website management; and
- Page Program Interns assist in the daily operations of the Indiana Senate Page Program, educate young Hoosiers on the legislative process, and facilitate students' experience in the Senate Chamber during session.
Qualified candidates must be at least a college sophomore, with positions being open to recent college graduates and graduate or law school students as well. Accepted candidates will earn an $800 biweekly stipend and benefit from scholarship and academic credit opportunities, professional development, community involvement and networking.
Regardless of role, our interns play an integral part in the legislative session and will be working side-by-side with legislators and staff. These are full-time positions at the Statehouse which typically begin with orientation in late December and conclude at the end of the legislative session in April 2023.
Applications are open now through Oct. 31. Apply online at IndianaSenateRepublicans.com or follow us @INSenateGOP on social media to see when our staff will be visiting your college or university's career fair.
