Schmitt sworn in as Senate District 48 state senator

State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper) was sworn in as state senator for Senate District 48 by Indiana Supreme Court Justice Geoffrey Slaughter in the Senate Chamber today.

Schmitt succeeds former State Sen. Mark Messmer, who resigned from his position Tuesday, Sept. 3. Schmitt will finish the remainder of Messmer's term through November 2026, serving Crawford, Dubois, Gibson, Perry, Pike and Spencer counties.

"It is a great honor to be able to represent my family, friends and neighbors in the Indiana Senate," Schmitt said. "I look forward to meeting with constituents across Senate District 48 as I work on legislation that will make our great state an even better place to live, work and raise a family."

Schmitt is a lifelong resident of southern Indiana and served as a member of the Dubois County Council from January 2023 through September 2024.

He holds degrees from both Vincennes University and Indiana State University.

For the last 30 years, Schmitt has worked on his family farm as a fifth-generation farmer. He has also worked in seed sales for the last 16 years.

Schmitt is a longtime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ireland, Ind.
