Red Cross-Indiana Region Hosting Free Training for Volunteers Interested in Disaster Response

LOCAL SOURCES:

The Red Cross-Indiana Region is hosting a free weekend training program for new and existing volunteers, preparing them to be a Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) member. DAT members respond to community crises such as home fires or natural disasters. They assist and guide the victims and provide them with resources for recovery. Examples include Psychological First Aid and Mass Care.

These classes will be offered virtually via Zoom. Volunteers are asked to register by 3:00pm on Friday, March 27 at  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ZeroToHeroIndiana

The training will run Saturday, March 28, 9 am-5 pm ET and Sunday, March 29, 1 pm-6 pm ET.

DAT is a group of volunteers dedicated to helping their community during a crisis. The content of this training course, which includes both instructor- and video-led courses, is usually covered in a six-week period, but the Red Cross has created a fast-track program so more volunteers can be certified and ready to respond to communities in need. The Indiana Region has pivoted in how the organization responds during coronavirus concerns to support vital services by moving normally in-person trainings to virtual trainings. There are immediate needs for volunteers to support their communities. Participants can register at the event as a new volunteer and receive basic skills training to respond to local disasters, such as fires.
