On the Streets with Jasper Police
By: Corbin Lingenfelter, News Director
Jasper- A typical interaction between civilians and police tends to be for a negative reason.
Whether it be a traffic stop or criminal investigation, the public tends to not see the behind the scenes work of those who serve and protect them.
On Friday, March 10th, Jasper Police gave WITZ the opportunity to see how an officer spends a portion of their shift. JPD officers work on 12 hour shifts, starting at 5:15 AM and then ending when the next group comes in at 5:15 PM. Shifts begin typically with a roll call before officers go out on patrol.
Officer Joey Moorman, a 2-year-veteran of the department, was our ride along officer.
Moorman is a Jasper native, graduated from Jasper High School before attending IU to major in Criminal Justice. He attended the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Indianapolis where he excelled in all aspects.
During a patrol, Officer Moorman is always searching for things that are dangerous or suspicious.
“I am big on driving dangers,” said Officer Moorman, “When the sun goes down I am on the lookout for headlight violations and other dangerous driving behaviors.”
Other than dangerous driving, Moorman also assists with other public emergencies. During our ride along, he assisted the Jasper Fire Department at the scene of a fire, pulling a hose from the truck and running to firefighters.
When it comes to interactions, Moorman says friendliness goes a long way for him.
“If you're friendly with me, I will be friendly with you.” He said.
WITZ and myself want to send a thank you to Jasper Police for allowing us to ride along with Officer Moorman and meet Officers Grant Goffinet, Clint Stewart, Ben Knies, and Communications Officer Abby Durcholz.
