NE Dubois Elementary School in the Spotlight

The Northeast Dubois County School Corporation gathered on Tuesday night for their regular board meeting, with a special focus on Northeast Dubois Elementary School.

At Tuesday’s meeting, NDES principal Courtney Hopf opened the evening with a presentation on “What’s happening at Northeast Dubois Elementary School.” For Fire Safety Week this month, students were able to learn more about our local fire departments and fire safety. They had the opportunity to go through the smokehouse, try on gear, spray the fire house, and explore fire truck. They also got to spend some time with the everyday heroes in our fire department.

Mrs. Hopf said that the Veterans Day celebration hosted at the school earlier this month had a great turnout and was a very special event. NDES students put on a program full of songs and stories and fed veterans through the generosity of local donations. They were joined by the St. Anthony Legion and several veteran family members.

This year’s election day provided another unique opportunity for students to learn. Classes held elections on topics of their choice to understand the election process. They learned how to evaluate candidates and weigh priorities, even receiving voter registration cards and “I Voted” stickers. Among other highlights, NDES kindergarten teachers gave their classes a presentation on how to properly use 911. Mrs. Hopf also said that students engage in STEM activities every week, which helps to build critical thinking skills.

In the board’s business agenda, the Superintendent Contract Hearing was opened and received no public comment. After reopening the regular board meeting, the Superintendent’s Contract for Superintendent, Dr. Tara Rasche, was approved. Other approvals included two Athletic Trainer contracts and two assistants at the Intermediate School. The athletic trainer contracts are a new addition, and hope was expressed that they will help to prevent injuries for student athletes. Dr. Rasche closed with a reminder of school closures on November 27-29 for the Thanksgiving Break.
