Messmer Column: Supporting Local Producers
Farmers' market season is in full swing across the state. Indiana has nearly 200 markets - almost one in every county - providing farmers and producers outlets to reach consumers and provide Hoosier communities with fresh produce and other artisan goods.
Many of these farmers' market vendors are part of Indiana Grown, which was created by the Indiana Department of Agriculture and boasts almost 2,000 members that sell locally made products. Homegrown food products continue to increase in popularity, and Hoosier vendors often provide an abundance for consumers.
While Indiana producers were previously only able to sell their products at farmers' markets or roadside stands, the Indiana General recently passed House Enrolled Act 1149, which broadens the number of places home-based vendors can sell their products. The law allows these vendors to sell their products online, from their homes and from any other location that lets them sell directly to consumers within the state. This provides an easier opportunity for these vendors to expand their businesses outside of farmers' market season.
HEA 1149 also highlights requirements regarding food safety when selling products. A home-based vendor must obtain a food handler certificate and follow the guidelines for proper handling practices and disease control measures.
Locally grown and made products are an important part of Indiana's economy. These new provisions will provide more opportunity for local producers to increase revenue and supply goods to more Hoosiers.
