Messmer Column: State Budget to be a Priority in 2023

Local Sources- On this week's Messmer Column, State Senator Mark Messmer (R-Jasper) shares the state budget will be a priority in 2023.

As we once again prepare to turn the calendar, legislators across Indiana are working on their goals for the Indiana General Assembly's 2023 legislative session.

While the ceremonial start for session was on Organizational Day in November, legislators expect to return to the Statehouse to commence bill hearings on Jan. 9.

During odd-numbered years, the legislature is tasked with crafting a two-year budget to fund programs that put Hoosier tax dollars to the best use.

Indiana has lived within its means for more than a decade, and Senate Republicans have been working hard to keep taxes low for Hoosiers. In fact, we passed a measure in 2022 to begin cutting income taxes starting in January.

While the state's financial reserves are strong, rising inflation and a potential short-term recession in 2023 is expected to influence lawmakers' decisions when crafting the next budget.

Like many Hoosiers, the Indiana General Assembly will have some difficult choices to make in the coming months. As your state senator, I will support a fiscally responsible budget and efforts to maintain the state's low tax rate.
