Messmer Column: On My Way Pre-K applications still open.
Local Sources- In this week's Messmer Column, State Senator Mark Messmer (R-Jasper) shares that On My Way Pre-K applications are still open.
Many Hoosier families can afford enrolling their children in pre-K courses, but for some it can be an extreme financial burden.
Initially established as a pilot program in 2014 by the General Assembly, the On My Way Pre-K grant program provides young children from low-income families with the opportunity to develop social and learning skills integral to K-12 academic success.
According to the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, exactly 4,793 children participated in the On My Way Pre-K program during the 2021-22 school year.
Through the program, children are taught early reading, math and science curriculum through instructional hours, lessons, activities and books. Students are able to follow their own personalized learning path, but must use the program at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week, the year before entering kindergarten.
Programs are available in homes, centers, ministries and schools, allowing families to choose the option that works best for them. Families without internet or computer access will be provided a Chromebook and satellite internet. Additionally, families will be partnered with a personal care representative who will monitor each child's progress and provide access to live help over phone or email six days a week.
To enroll in the 2022-23 school year, children must be four years old by Aug. 1 and plan to attend kindergarten during the 2023-24 school year. Eligible families must have an income below 127% of the federal poverty level with parents working, attending or searching for employment.
I encourage eligible parents in our community to consider enrolling their young children in the On My Way Pre-K program. Providing Hoosier kids with a pre-K education is the first step in ensuring success in their K-12 education.
