Messmer Column: Improving access to mental health care

Local Sources- On this week's Messmer Column, State Senator Mark Messmer (R-Jasper) discusses improving access to mental health care.

In recent years, we have seen the demand for mental health services steadily increase. As the stigma of mental illness fades away, more Hoosiers are reaching out to get the help they need.

However, the need is beginning to outpace the number of mental health professionals available, and that is especially true in rural communities where there isn't a large concentration of health care options.

That is why, this year, I authored Senate Enrolled Act 365, which establishes the Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact. This new law allows psychologists who are licensed in a compact state to practice telepsychology for clients in Indiana and temporarily practice in-person, face-to-face psychology for up to 30 days per year. This is a big step toward improving access to health care for all Hoosiers.

Over the course of the past few years, we have seen how important telehealth services have been for citizens across the state. Advancements in technology have made it so that we can still receive quality health care services from outside of a doctor's office.

By increasing the pool of licensed mental health professionals able to practice in the state, and allowing them to do so remotely, it is my hope that no Hoosier will be restricted from getting the kind of mental health care they need.

If you or someone you know is in need of mental health care services, I encourage you to visit BeWellIndiana.org to be connected with a mental health professional.
