Messmer Column: Adoption Awareness Month

Local Sources- On this week's Messmer Column, State Senator Mark Messmer (R-Jasper) discusses Adoption Awareness Month.

Each year, the U.S. Children's Bureau recognizes November as National Adoption Month. This initiative aims to increase awareness of children in the foster care system who are in need of a loving family.

This month, the Indiana Adoption Program, the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) and Firefly Children and Family Alliance are working together to share stories of children across Indiana who are waiting to find their forever families and share success stories of those who already have. Throughout November, DCS will share photos and videos from adoption events around the state across their social media accounts.

While we have made great strides in improving adoption numbers in recent years, there are still more than 150 children in search of an adoptive family.

Every child deserves to have a permanent and loving home, a family that cares for them and the confidence that there is always someone in their corner. Many Hoosier children still long for a family to open their home and their hearts to them. It is up to our community to protect these children and support the adoption care system that welcomes these children into families and gives them a chance to experience the love and care they deserve.
