Memorial Hospital Makes Donation, Holds Day of Prayer, for People of Ukraine

Jasper – Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center hosted a day of prayer for the people of Ukraine and made a donation on Friday, March 11.

Caregivers and community members were invited to participate in a short service in the hospital’s Chapel, with several opportunities to join together in prayer throughout the day. In conjunction, the Memorial Hospital Foundation collected monetary donations to be sent to Catholic Relief Services – an organization whose mission is to carry out the commitment of the Bishops of the United States to assist the poor and vulnerable overseas.

The Memorial Hospital Foundation offered a match of up to $2,500 for any donations made that day from their International Mission Restricted Fund. In total, over $2,300 was donated by Caregivers and community members in a single day. The Memorial Hospital Foundation increased their commitment to $2,700, to make it an even $5,000 contribution on behalf of the hospital community.

“I received a phone call from a community member asking if there was anything local happening to support the people of Ukraine,” said Sister Rose Mary Rexing, Executive Director of Mission Integration at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center. “Her call inspired me to take action and work with our Memorial Hospital team to put together the day of prayer. I’ve always known that we are blessed with a giving community, but I was so impressed by the amount we were able to send to assist in what Catholic Relief Services and Caritas are already doing in Ukraine.”

According to Catholic Relief Service’s website, they have active partners on the ground preparing across Ukraine and bordering countries, providing safe shelter, hot meals, hygiene supplies, transport to safe areas, counseling support and more.

The Memorial Hospital Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center. The matching gift was an opportunity for the Foundation to encourage the act of giving and to utilize funds designated to match the hospital’s mission on an international level. “I am honored to work in a community with such generous hearts,” said Deidra Church, Director of the Memorial Hospital Foundation. “The need for assistance in Ukraine is great, and we hope this contribution will make a significant impact for those in need.”

The Memorial Hospital Foundation is no longer accepting donations for Ukraine, but encourages community members to research top-rated charities who are doing valuable work overseas if you wish to contribute to the Ukraine relief effort specifically.
