HUNTINGBURG -- Work on water mains along U.S. 231 in Huntingburg began today and will continue through mid-September.

“Last year, the [city] council approved a major water improvement project,” explains Huntingburg Mayor Denny Spinner.  “The first phase of that is [beginning today] and, that would be, the installation of a new water main, basically, the full length of the city.”

The construction will span 11 city blocks along U.S. 231 between the following streets…

  • 1st - 3rd Streets
  • 5th - 12th Streets
  • Maple and Chestnut Streets
  • And 2nd – 1st Avenues.

Crews will begin on the south end of the project and work north.

“We started looking at this project about two-and-a-half, three years ago when the state of Indiana announced their pavement program for U.S. 231.”   He adds Jasper just completed their waterline work and Huntingburg officials want to be ready for when their turn comes in 2021.

The first part of the project will cost just over $1.3 million.  Work should be done by mid-September.
