Lifesaving Technology at Work with Jasper Emergency Responders
The Jasper Board of Public Works and Safety met early Tuesday morning with an agenda
featuring safety department updates and upcoming public events.
Fire Chief Kenny Hochgesang reported that the department received training at their meeting
on Thursday night oir the recently purchased Lucas devices. These mechanical chest
compression systems provide support to first responders as they administer life-saving
measures, allowing for consistent compressions to be delivered during CPR. Just two days after
training, emergency services were called on Saturday afternoon and a Lucas device was used on
scene. Having been previously unresponsive, the patient was able to speak to officers just
moments later. Chief Hochgesang highlighted the importance of this lifesaving technology and
providing training for its use. In a project update, the department reported that a $21,800 low
bid was received from Wagner Painting for painting the interior of the fire stations, and the
board agreed to accept the bid.
In his report, Police Chief Nathan Schmitt provided a hiring update for the department’s open
positions. A new dispatcher has been hired and will begin April 1. The open sergeant position
has also been filled.
As winter weather clears out, new public events are steadily finding their way onto city
calendars. The Dubois County Substance Abuse Council will be hosting a new informational
event and fundraiser. The Live to Rise 5k fun run was approved by the board to be held on
September 28 from 10-2 at the Riverwalk’s Dave Buehler Plaza. The course will extend from the
Plaza Gazebo to Ruxer Golf Course and back. The event is open to the public and will feature a
cookout at the conclusion of the run.
Memorial Hospital will be hosting a baby safety shower on May 14 at the Parklands Pavilion
from 5-8 PM. This event, in its seventh year, is designed for women in their second trimester to
educate expectant mothers about safety practices for babies in their first year.
In his report, Department of Community Development & Planning Director Josh Gunselman
advised the board that his office has begun hiring a full-time permitting position. Any interested
applicants from the community can visit the city’s website for more information or can contact
the department directly.
