John DeWitte of Scout Troop 186 Earns Eagle Scout Designation

Ferdinand- Boy Scouts of America Troop 186 member John DeWitte was awarded the Eagle Scout designation at a Court of Honor ceremony held at the Huntingburg United Methodist Church in Huntingburg, Indiana on December 3, 2022.

John is the son of Eugene “Duke” and Susan DeWitte of Birdseye, Indiana and is a Freshman at Forest Park High School in Ferdinand, Indiana.

John’s Eagle Scout Service Project was hosted by Dubois County Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 673 in Jasper, Indiana where he reclaimed a closet space and built a much needed shelving system. His efforts included raising more than $660 in funds and collecting material donations from Krempp Lumber Company. He also developed plans for logistics, safety, project design, scheduling, and coordinated more than 80 volunteer hours donated by fellow Scouts, family members and friends. Numerous presentations and progress reports were also presented to both the Eagle Scout Committee and VFW Post 673 membership during monthly meetings.  The updated space significantly increased safety and organization where general supplies are maintained and used flags are stored for eventual disposal.

VFW Post 673 Commander, Jeremy Mundy, commended John’s efforts at his Court of Honor Ceremony stating, “John’s hard work on our storage area is most definitely appreciated. We found it refreshing to see him and his volunteers working hard in our Post to accomplish the task at hand.”

John was also commended by Scout Leadership for his continued commitment to Troop 186 by passing on his knowledge and for dedicating his time to fellow Scouts.  While he has reached this most significant milestone in his personal journey as a Scout, he commented that he also recognizes the need to assist others in their respective journeys toward the same successes.

Members of Boy Scouts of America Troop 186, the Buffalo Trace Council, and the Lincoln Heritage District, along with VFW Post 673, extended congratulations to Eagle Scout John DeWitte during the reception following this most significant accomplishment, and sincere appreciation for John’s  continued service to our communities.
