Jasper Summer Activities in Full Swing

The Park and Recreation Board convened for its regular July board meeting to hear updates on the many ongoing projects in progress and summer activities offered throughout the city of Jasper. 

Quotes were opened for the upcoming bridge work as well as the Habig Center parking expansion. The Municipal Pool Renovation continues to make great progress, with the structure of the pool itself beginning to take shape. 

Older Americans Director Carie Dick provided an update to the board that things remain busy at the Habig Center, with well attended classes and a continued demand for programming for Jasper’s senior residents. Line dancing has been a fun addition, and the Center’s calendar is full of upcoming events. The Derby Dinner is coming up on August 7 th where guest will enjoy dinner and a night watching “Annie.” Dubois County residents age 55 and older can visit the Park and Rec website for more information on classes and activities, or can contact the Habig Center directly at 812-482-4455. 

The Story Walk has been relocated from Parklands to the Ruxer Disc Golf Course close to the Ruxer Clubhouse, and families are invited to come out and bring the kids. The Parklands Prairie Walk will return on the evening of July 23 rd from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. This event will introduce guests to many of the native prairie plants found at the Parklands, and hear about how the space was transformed from a golf course into an ecological space. The guided nature walk will be led by native plant and wildlife experts and will begin at the Parklands Pavilion. 

Private space rentals continue to see increased bookings, and the driving range has proven to be a popular addition to the golf course. Summer programming is in full swing, with Kamp 4 Kids providing fun opportunities like Donuts with Detectives. The Boys Homerun Contest and Girls Softball Day both saw enthusiastic responses and were well-attended. Kickball has continued to be a popular offering, although some rescheduling has been necessary due to inclement weather. 

The Park Department and the Jasper Fire Department will be hosting a lunch at the Riverwalk Plaza on Friday, July 12 th at 11 am for kids ages 6 to 14. Families can look forward to Trivia Night, which will be held at the Parklands Pavilion at 6 pm on Saturday, July 13 th . Guests should register to secure their spot on the Park Facebook page or call 812-482-5959. There are also a few tickets left for the Spirit of Jasper Ride to League Stadium on Saturday, July 13 th , with a departure from the Train Depot at 4 pm. Several Ride and Dine opportunities remain for the season, and tickets can be purchased online.
