Jasper Prepares for Fun in the Sun
Jasper’s Board of Public Works and Safety met early on Tuesday morning with an agenda full of
upcoming events that will take advantage of the beautiful weather in the coming months.
Laura Grammer updated the board on the many decisions that are being made in preparation
for Jasper Strassenfest, which is coming back to the Square this year. Potential road closures
were discussed to allow for pedestrian traffic and Strassenfest events, as well as the
coordination of construction projects planned near Jasper’s downtown district.
DC Multisport will hosting multiple events, beginning with the Strassenfest Bike Ride from 8 to
1 on Saturday, August 3 rd . The ride, which usually starts at the Parklands, will be starting at
Jasper High School this year, and there are four routes to choose from.
DC also received approval for the Kids Fun Run at the Square on Friday, September 20 th , which
will be a family-friendly event with food trucks and activities to be held before the football
game. The Heartland Half Marathon, Team Challenge, and 5k will be held on Saturday,
September 21 st . This year’s new route will start in front of City Hall, leading toward the
Riverwalk and the Mill, and out toward Newton and the Jasper Youth Sports Complex.
DC’s Battle of the Paddle Pickleball will be held on Saturday, September 28 th and Sunday,
September 29 th . This is a free event, open to the public, at the Bohnert Park Pickleball Courts.
Sell 4 Free is hosting an event on Sunday, September 25 th at noon to celebrate their 25 th
anniversary. Schnitzelbank will be on hand with burgers and hot dogs, and yard games will be
set up for outdoor fun. The event is free and open to the public.
In other news, Chief Hochgesang received approval from the board to utilize recent donations
received from private citizens for the purchase of new radios for the fire department, which will
greatly enhance communications with dispatch. City Engineer Chard Hurm provided updates on
bids received for the Main Street Phase 2 construction project. The board accepted a bid for
just over $3.7 million for the project to proceed. Jeff Theising of the Street Department also
provided his report and received the board’s authorization to start the bid process for three
pavement preservations and the purchase of a one-ton truck with spreader and plow. The
department was also approved to close Clay Street for one day this week between 2 nd and 3 rd to
repair an inlet and damaged road surface. The closure will not affect business traffic at Jasper
Group and Sitex.
