Jasper PD Address Siren Silence
Jasper- During Monday’s storms, Jasper Police were trying to be proactive and alert citizens of potential severe weather.
That did not happen in some areas of the city. City officials say three of the city's tornado sirens; 17th, 20th, and 37th streets, did not activate due to power outages. These sirens have battery backups, but the backups failed. Officials say inspections and repairs are being made to these sirens. No tornado moved through the city.
In a notice provided by the city, sirens are not intended to wake a citizen or alert them when inside their home. The best way to know if you should seek shelter during severe weather is by having a NOAA weather radio or monitoring your smartphone.
Citizens who purchase a weather radio can take it to the Dubois County EMA for programming, at no cost to the citizen.
