Jasper Marching Wildcats Advance to ISSMA State Band Finals
On Saturday, the Indiana State School Music Association held their Semi-State Open Class Marching
Band Competitions.
Pike High School in Indianapolis hosted the Open Class B competition, where the Marching Wildcats of
Jasper High School battled some of the top programs in the state. The 117 members of the JHS
marching band traveled for over 3 hours via bus to represent Dubois County. Their offering, led by
band director Chad Gayso, is entitled “Heartistry” and is their homage to the power that music has in
matters of the heart.
The day was marked by cold temperatures and gusty winds, presenting significant challenges for color
guard members and instrumentalists alike. Bracing against the daunting weather and staunch musical
competition, Jasper survived the day where 50% of the field was eliminated from contention. In Class
B, the Marching Wildcats finished fifth overall, earning them a coveted spot in next month’s highly
competitive State Final. There, they will face other powerhouse programs including Evansville North,
Greenfield, Greenwood, Concord, Pendleton Heights, and others.
In Class D, Forest Park will also represent Dubois County in the State Competition. Other local schools
advancing include Castle High School in Class A, in Class B, North High School, in Class C, Boonville and
Princeton Community High School, and in Class D, Mater Dei, who will join Forest Park. ISSMA State
Finals will be held at Lucas Old Stadium in Indianapolis on November 9.
