Jasper Elementary Ranks Top 5 in the State
Literacy was in strong focus at this month’s Greater Jasper Consolidated Schools board meeting,
as principals Bauer, Taylor, and Erny provided a breakdown of where local schools rank in state
assessment.
Marks were high for all GJCS with Jasper Elementary performing particularly well, ranking in the
top 5 of 900 Indiana Schools. Likewise, Ireland Elementary celebrated a remarkable
achievement of 100% passing scores on iRead. Educators attributed the success to hard-
working teachers and literacy coaches, as well as new sources of growth data that allow schools
to more quickly and accurately gauge students’ needs and achievements. The trio pointed out
their shared commitment to literacy growth and student recognition, regardless of reading
level. The board further showed its steadfast support in strengthening literacy with its approval
of multiple summer programs for students, and gave the go-ahead for distribution of the
Indiana Early Learning Grant to eligible teachers and staff.
Additionally, the mayor was on hand to see the board approve the sale of 10 acres of land
adjoining the Parklands that may become the site for the Regional Wellness Center. The parcel
has been owned by the school board since being purchased in 2014, and while the details of the
sale will be negotiated at a later date, the approval is a major step forward in the project. Board
president Greg Eckerle said that he feels it is a move that benefits the district as well, adding
that in this case, “What’s good for the city is good for the schools.” Doubling down on the
strong-schools-make-for-a-strong-city theme, the board voted to approve an update to the
district’s network servers, as well as to move forward with improvements on athletic and
building facilities that are currently in the bidding stage.
The next GJCS board meeting will be held on March 18, 2024 at 7:00 pm in the JHS Community
Room.
