Jasper Celebrates National Police Week
Jasper’s regular Board of Public Works and Safety meeting came to order early Tuesday
morning, paying tribute to Jasper’s law enforcement officers.
Mayor Dean Vonderheide began by issuing a proclamation of May 12 th -18 th as National Police
Week and thanking our Jasper Police Department for all that they do to keep the public safe. In
his report to the board, Chief Nathan Schmitt said that there were 71 arrests last month, which
is higher than usual, and included some more serious calls. He commended Jasper’s police
officers for their handling of these situations, some of which included mental health
interventions and the de-escalation of violent confrontations. The chief reminded everyone in
the community to be respectful of their neighbors and to be courteous when driving through
residential neighborhoods. The city’s program that adds patrol cars following school buses and
the addition of cameras on the stop arms has been successful at reducing violations around
school buses, but drivers still need to be more aware of frequents stops as children enter and
exit the bus.
The Dubois County Veterans Council will be bringing their Memorial Day event back to the
county seat this year. Their observation of Memorial Day will be held at 10 AM on Saturday,
May 25 th in Jasper, at the Veteran’s Memoria Fountain in Downtown Square, on the west side of
the Courthouse. All Dubois County veterans’ organizations will be represented, and our fallen
service members and veterans who have recently passed will be remembered. The lowering of
the flag will be done by the Marine Corps League, followed by the singing of the National
Anthem and other patriotic songs.

at 8:30 AM. It will begin at the church property and move through the Holy Family Church
streets, including Schroeder, Brames, and Church. Traffic on these streets will be affected

2 nd , at 10:30 AM, CrossPoint Church will hold their Church in the Park event at Bohnert Park.
