Jasper Board of Public Works and Safety Prepares for a Busy Summer Season
The Jasper Board of Public Works and Safety met early on Tuesday morning to discuss some
upcoming projects and events for the city.
Quotes were opened for a new one-ton dump truck and salt spreader, which will be taken
under advisement. Bids were also opened for the upcoming City of Jasper Street Rehabilitation
project.
The Alzheimer’s Association received approval from the board for two upcoming events,
beginning with a Jasper Kick-off celebration at the Train Depot on Tuesday, July 9 th from 3-6 pm.
The second event approved was the 2024 Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Sunday, October 6 th at
1:30 pm at the Jasper Riverwalk Dave Buehler Plaza.
In anticipation of the increased pedestrian traffic for the Heartland Half Marathon, the board
approved DC Multisport’s request to place portable toilets and hand washing stations at the
City Hall parking lot in late September for duration of the event.
Police Chief Nathan Schmitt presented his report to the board and was authorized to make a
conditional offer of employment for a new full-time telecommunicator. Chief Schmitt explained
that a 2020 Ford that was previously donated for use by school resource officers was needing
some repair, and a donor has expressed the desire to pledge funds toward a new vehicle. The
board approved the trade-in of the previous vehicle to be used toward the purchase of a new
2024 Ford Bronco.
Street Commissioner Jeff Theising received the board’s permission to close Highland Street
north of the St. James Street intersection within the next two weeks for a storm sewer
replacement. He also indicated that multiple paving projects are underway throughout the city,
and that the forecasted sunny weather should contribute to successful completion. The board
also approved a street closure request by Joe Rohleder at 1437 St. James Street in the near
future to remove some trees from his property.
