Indiana Senator Mark Messmer on the Energy Assistance Program

Local Sources - In this week's report from Indiana Senator Mark Messmer, Messmer speaks on the Energy Assistance Program.

As we enter the colder months, it’s important Hoosiers are aware of and prepared for the necessary changes that come with cold weather.

During the winter, heating bills can get pretty high, creating financial difficulties for some families. To help alleviate this financial hardship, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services manages the Energy Assistance Program (EAP).

The EAP is a one-time benefit, helping Hoosiers whose utilities are about to be disconnected. While the EAP doesn’t cover all of your heating and electric costs, it is a great resource to help Hoosiers get through a tough time.

Eligibility requirements are dependent on the number of persons in the home and their maximum income. The application is officially open and available to Hoosiers in all 92 counties. The last day to apply is May 16, 2022. To learn more about the program or how to apply, you can visit in.gov/ihcda/2329.htm.

Last year alone, more than 80 million Americans had difficulty paying their utility bills. I encourage you to keep this program in mind if you or someone you know is struggling.
