Huntingburg Man Arrested after Brief Chase
Around 4:30pm Wednesday, Indiana State Police Trooper Dustin Stein was patrolling southbound SR 61 in Campbelltown when the driver of a 1997 Ford Ranchero drove left of center and nearly struck his patrol car. Trooper Stein immediately made a U-turn and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver, who was later identified as Bruce Phillips, 35, of Huntingburg, slowed down and turned into a driveway but drove around a tree and re-entered SR 61 north.
Phillips turned onto CR 75 North where he drove into a cemetery before losing control and sliding down an embankment. Phillips immediately jumped out of his truck and ran into a nearby wooded area. A female passenger was not injured and was later released. A perimeter was established, and officers entered the wooded area where Phillips was eventually located and arrested without further incident. Phillips displayed signs of impairment and failed field sobriety tests but refused to submit to a chemical test. He was taken to the Pike County Jail where he is currently being held on bond.
