HUNTINGBURG BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS MEETING
It’s car show season in Huntingburg! The Huntingburg Board of Public Works opened their
meeting on Thursday morning with applications for some exciting special events. Permission
was given to hold the annual Kiwanis Car Show on April 27 from 7 AM to 3 PM on 4 th Street
from Main to Van Buren Street. Joe Myers of Washington, Indiana represented the Volkswagen
Club Car Show, which has been held in Huntingburg for 14 years. The show, which will be held
on the first weekend in August, will be relocated this year to 4 th Street from its regular spot in
the park due to a conflict with League Stadium’s Big League Baseball Classic.
An update was given on the status of the McBride Home, a burned out property at 410 N.
Washington St. that was demolished a year ago. A special assessment will be collected for the
city’s incurred costs. The Unsafe Building Certification of Costs reflected total expenses of
$12,634.26 at the time of demolition, which was approved by the board.
In an update on the City Street Department roof, estimates of costs have proven that the
project will need to go out to bid. The city is working with Universal Design to come up with the
bid package specifications and they will be conducting an inspection this Friday. The roof is in
very poor repair and needs to be addressed immediately for the safety of the street
department employees that work there. Wastewater Superintendent Brad Coomer provided an
update to the board on the status of the plant bid opening, which is expected to have three
bidders. A motion was approved to form the required bid opening committee.
In his report, Police Chief Arthur Parks announced that the department will be restarting its
canine program. A quote of $19,940 was provided as the total costs for a Narcotic Detector
Dog, including necessary training and travel costs for officer being trained. The board approved
the purchase, which will be primarily paid by the department’s narcotics funds and additional
grant funding.
Fire Chief Don Heim provided his report to the board, noting that departmental training is
expected to be held on March 20, which will require a brief road closure of approximately an
hour. Residents have already been notified and approved the closure. The board approved the
donation of a pump that was recently moved into surplus to the Pike County Cooperative
Education program so that they can use it for training purposes. Chief Heim also said that the
fire department and auxiliary are planning an open house to be held sometime in May with fire
extinguisher training, food for sale, and lots of other fun activities for kids and families. Event
details regarding location and times will be released once they are finalized.
