Habitat for Humanity of Dubois County Dedicates Newest Home

JASPER -- Habitat for Humanity of Dubois County (HFHDC) board members, public officials and volunteers joined the newest Habitat homeowner’s family and friends to ceremonially dedicate a new home along Birk Drive in Jasper last Sunday.

Even with the COVID-19 pandemic, Habitat for Humanity of Dubois County has been dedicated to building a new home and helping local families through the devotion and generosity of Habitat volunteers, local businesses, and community donors.

Habitat coordinators were able to complete the home on schedule through the hard work of a small group of core volunteers — including local high school students through a new joint build partnership with Patoka Valley Cooperative and Vincennes University. This group, also including the new homeowner and other volunteers, worked more than 300 hours each to complete the new home.

“This latest home build has been unique with the challenges presented by the pandemic, but it is a testament of the resiliency and commitment of our volunteers and community to come together to achieve something special,” remarked Executive Director Michael Richard. “This home represents hard work, the power of community that Dubois County has and the dream of home ownership for a very deserving family.”

HFHDC will soon be accepting applications for their next home build, tentatively scheduled to begin in late August 2021. Habitat for Humanity does not give away free homes. Instead, they partner with a pre-qualified future Habitat homeowner to build a house alongside volunteers, who then pay an affordable mortgage that they would not have been able to without Habitat.

As a nearly entirely volunteer led organization, volunteers of all skill levels are encouraged to join in some capacity, whether it be on a construction site, through fundraising efforts and outreach or at the organization’s ReStore located near the Dubois County 4-H fairgrounds. For more information or to support the build, please call Executive Director Michael Richard at 812-704-8441 or [email protected].
