Fall Family Events Fill Jasper City Calendar

On Tuesday morning, Jasper’s Department of Public Works and Safety held their regular board meeting with an agenda stacked with community updates. 

Jasper’s Park and Rec Department kicked off Trick or Treating with Halloween on the Green this past Sunday. Mayor Vonderheide praised the work that went into preparing for the day, saying, “hats off to the department for a great event.” On Halloween this Thursday, October 31 st , the city’s official Trick or Treating hours will be from 6-8 pm. Please remember only to stop at houses with their porch lights on. 

On Saturday, November 2, the Touch a Truck Event will be held at the Schroeder Complex on 2 nd Avenue from 9:30-11 am. Quiet time will be from 9:30-10 am, with no sirens and horns. At this free, family event, kids can explore trucks and equipment of all shapes and sizes from the City of Jasper. “Local heroes” will be on hand to answer questions! 

There is a planned water outage for Tuesday, October 29 th from 8:30-1 to repair a water main break on Truman Road. Once water service is restored, residents should turn on their cold water tap and run it for 10 minutes. There may be a boil advisory issued. If there is, that will be for a minimum of 48 hours or until samples pass testing. Water should be boiled for 5 minutes before pet or human consumption. The Water Department will communicate updates as more information is available. If you have questions, please contact the department at 812-482-5252. Managers’ reports were focused heavily on securing necessary equipment and departmental training. Police Chief Nathan Schmitt received permission to seek quotes for new police vehicles as well as to enter into a taser contract for the 2025 department budget. Fire Chef Kenny Hochgesang received permission to purchase a new extrication tool. Street Commissioner Jeff Theising received permission for staff to attend the Asphalt Pavement Association Winter Conference in Muncie, where they will learn more about the latest innovations and products in the industry ahead of the next paving season. 

City Attorney Renee Kabrick presented the new contract from Axiom to the board for their approval. Axiom provides marketing, creative, and media services to the city, particularly in regard to marketing related to tourism. The board agreed to approve the agreement, which will be effective at the first of the year.
