CODE RED; Dubois County Schools Continue In-Person Learning

It brings our total to 1,723 since the start of the pandemic.

Our death toll stands at 28.  

Dubois County has a seven-day positivity rate of 16.5%.  That high rate is what led state officials to place the county under a CODE RED designation Wednesday afternoon.  That’s the highest color-code.  It’s meant to be used as a guide to assist schools and local governments in their decision making.

All of the county’s school districts released a joint-letter to parents on Wednesday.  In that statement, Dubois County school officials say, "while community spread is high in the county, the impact on our schools has been low."

All Dubois County Schools plan to remain in class.  They’ll continue the mitigation efforts that were already in place like daily temperature screening, face masks, physical distancing, when possible, enhanced cleaning and sanitizing, isolating and sending home symptomatic students and providing virtual learning to all students who are absent due to illness or quarantine.

This does NOT mean our school corporation will be operating in stage red (virtual) at this time.  We will continue, at this moment, to have school (in-person) at all of our buildings.  IF our county has a sustained period of being in RED as defined by the Indiana Department of Health or IF our  corporation covid related data would dictate, we could be forced to make adjustments to our in-person learning at that time.  Our administrative teams and our staff continue to prepare for the possibility of going to a hybrid or full virtual model.  But again, at this time, neither the Dubois County Department of Health nor our current corporation data suggest that we need to alter our in-person learning model.  In short, our overall student and staff absentee rates and specifically our covid related issues are not, at this time, showing the same increases or concerns as the overall county numbers. 

Additionally, with regard to athletics and extracurricular activities, please see below:

• Athletic practices at all levels....NO CHANGE at this time.  They will continue as planned until further notice.
• The football Sectional Championship game vs Salem at Raider Field Friday night...is ON as planned.  The only exception will be a reduced number of fans/tickets allowed.  As a result of the County RED designation, SWDCS had to submit a plan for this game to be approved by the Dubois County Department of Health.  The SHS Athletic Department has released those details through its normal means.
• As a result of the Dubois County RED designation, SWDCS has to re-submit to the Dubois County Department of Health our facility plans for all of our home winter events.  There are no cancelations of SWDCS winter sports events at this time, however the number of fans will be limited as we continue to emphasize social distancing.  The building level Athletic Departments or Principals will be providing more detail in that regard within the next few days.          

In closing, I would like to say how thankful I am for the cooperation and vigilance of the students, parents, and staff of SWDCS with regard to executing our re-opening game plan and being able to provide in-person learning as well as extra-curricular opportunities for our students for the last few months during this pandemic.  It is my hope, that with continued planning and vigilance by all involved, we can continue to do so.  If however we are forced to pivot and change to a different model, I am confident that we are prepared to execute that plan as well.

Esto NO significa que nuestra corporación escolar  estará operando en etapa roja (virtual) en este momento. Continuaremos asistiendo a clases en persona en todos nuestros edificios. SI nuestro condado continua en código rojo por un período sostenido de tiempo, según lo define el Departamento de Salud de Indiana o SI los datos relacionados con covid de nuestra corporación lo dictan, podríamos vernos obligados a realizar ajustes en nuestro aprendizaje en persona en ese momento. Pero nuevamente, en este momento, ni el Departamento de Salud del Condado de Dubois ni los datos de nuestra corporación actual sugieren que debamos alterar nuestro modelo de aprendizaje en persona. En resumen, nuestras tasas generales de ausentismo de estudiantes y personal y específicamente nuestros problemas relacionados con el covid no muestran, en este momento, los mismos aumentos o preocupaciones que las cifras generales del condado.

Como resultado de la designación código rojo del Condado, SWDCS tuvo que presentar un plan para que este juego fuera aprobado por el Departamento de Salud del Condado de Dubois. El Departamento de Deportes de SHS ha publicado esos detalles a través de sus medios habituales.

Como resultado de la designación CÓDIGO ROJO del Condado de Dubois, SWDCS tiene que volver a enviar al Departamento de Salud del Condado de Dubois los planes de nuestras instalaciones para todos nuestros eventos de invierno en nuestras instalaciones. No hay cancelaciones de eventos de deportes de invierno SWDCS en este momento, sin embargo, el número de entradas serán limitadas a medida que continuamos enfatizando el distanciamiento social.
