INDIANAPOLIS -- Multiple people were shot at the FedEx facility at the Indianapolis International Airport, said Indianapolis Metro Police.
Eight people were found dead by police, not including the shooter. The shooter was found dead later from an apparent suicide. Other people were injured in the attack.
The calls came in, beginning at 11:10. Just before midnight Indiana State Police Tweeted that I-70 in both directions at the facility was closed. It has since reopened.
“As officers arrived, they came in contact with an active shooter incident,” said IMPD spokesperson Genae Cook. “Preliminary information at the time is that the shooter has taken his own life. We don’t feel that there is an active threat to the community at this time.”
Cook asked people who had family who work at FedEx, and who could not be contacted, to come to the Holiday Inn Express at 8555 Stanstead Dr.
“IMPD’s chaplain’s office, along with several others, will be at that location to assist.”
Police were not specific about how many victims were shot, nor did they provide a status on the victims, as to whether they were dead or wounded.
Our newsgathering partners at WISH TV spoke to a witness who said a man had a sub machine gun, firing it in the open. IMPD did not speak about specifics of the shooting at their 1:15 a.m. news conference.
Jeremiah Miller and Timothy Boillet, two friends who work the night shift at FedEx, were on a lunch break when they say that started hearing the gunshots ring out shortly after 11:00 p.m.
"We hear two gunshots, and we think it’s a car, a muffler, and then we hear three more shots and we think it must be an engine problem," said Miller. "Then we start hearing six to around ten shots."
That’s when Miller said he got up and peaked out of the break room.
"I saw a man with a submachine gun of some sort, an automatic rifle, and he was firing out into the open," he said. "I immediately ducked down and got scared."
"I didn’t exactly see anyone get shot but after hearing the shots I saw a body behind a vehicle," added Boillet.
U.S. Rep. André Carson tweeted at 2:44 a.m. Friday:
"I am heartbroken by the mass shooting at the FedEx facility here in Indianapolis and praying for all affected by this tragedy. I am communicating with local authorities to get all details of the attack and my office stands ready to help everyone affected any way we can."
